Invitation
Fifth
Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty
(Valencia- 29 to 31 March 2006)
organised jointly by the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
and the City of Valencia with the support of
the Valencia region and the Spanish Government
INVITATION
The
UNDP and the City of Valencia have the honour to invite you
to attend the 5th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against
Poverty, to be held in the Palacio de Congresos of Valencia
(Spain), from 29 to 31 March 2006.
This
Forum will coincide with the end of the first United Nations
Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006) and will
mark the 10th anniversary of the creation of the World Alliance
of Cities Against Poverty by the UNDP.
It
will draw lessons from the past decade in order to elaborate
a municipal action strategy designed to expand the efforts
aimed at halving by 2015 the proportion of people affected
by extreme poverty and hunger, in accordance with the Millennium
Development Goals adopted in 2000 at the UN by all governments.
The
Valencia Forum will be built around experiences of municipalities
from all continents in fighting poverty. The exchanges will
focus on three major themes: resources mobilization, the promotion
of partnerships and capacity building. Nine workshops will
allow to hold a “cooperation fair” and to further
explore municipal initiatives which do not require financial
resources, access to sources of funding for urban projects,
synergies with regional and international solidarity networks,
the capacity building for municipalities, and the use of new
information technologies.
The exchange will benefit from the presence of other actors
concerned with local governance: associations of local authorities,
representatives from governments and the private sector, non
governmental organizations and universities in order to make
this Forum a privileged setting for establishing contacts,
getting information on innovative programmes, promoting partnerships
and exploring financing possibilities.
Attached
you will find a documentation on the works. Please return
the participation form and the hotel booking form as soon
as possible (no later than 15 March 2006).
