The President of the World Family Organization, Dr. Deisi Kusztra, finalized the tentative program for ECOSOC.
The 2010 AMR will be held during the high-level segment of the ECOSOC Substantive Session, scheduled for the last week of June 2010, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Annual Ministerial Review (AMR), which was mandated at the 2005 World Summit, assesses the progress made in the implementation of the MDGs and the other goals and targets agreed at the major UN conferences and summits over the past 15 years, which constitute the United Nations Development Agenda (UNDA). Each year, the AMR focuses on a specific aspect of the UNDA. In 2010, it will focus on “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and the empowerment of women”.
The Review consists of a general debate and roundtable discussions with leading experts on the AMR theme, where Ministers and other high-level officials assess progress (or lack thereof) towards the achievement of the MDGs. Each year developing and developed countries make national voluntary presentations (NVPs). For the 2010 AMR, a record number of fifteen countries have volunteered for NVPs, including Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Greece, Guatemala, Moldova, Mongolia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Congo, Republic of Korea and the United States. A website on “Development strategies that work” captures examples of best practices and lessons learned by NVP countries. The official meetings are complemented by an AMR innovation fair, side events and an NGO ECOSOC high-level segment forum. |
