Family Africa*: 2011, Overview of the year

 
   
  2011 was a year of exciting expansion. Be­sides conducting our ongoing HIV/AID projects and work with vulnerable children 52 weeks a year, other new far reaching projects were initiated including:
 

 

* Support group for the aged and vulnerable fami­lies attached to which we initiated our 4th food gar­den in Thabo Mbeki township.

* “Gogo” (grandmother) headed support group in Diepsloot for those caring for orphans.

* Child Headed household unit caring for those children living on their own due to the death of parents.

* A small school for the children of refugees who have been unable so far toattend school in South Africa.

* “Teen Dream” programme which is now every week, teaching dance, music, drama and other skills including a full computer course.

* Our HIV seminars for teachers in townships have also been launched with great success reaching teachers from 28 creches/schools so far as well as 50 counsellors, caregivers and clinic staff.

* We have conducted HIV testing campaigns and conducted HIV awareness programmes for thou­sands of primary and secondary age students in Johannesburg and KZN.

* We have organised excursions to Pretoria and Johannesburg zoos for Gogos who have never been to a zoo before plus an excursion for the children of our Free day Care Care.

* Christmas parties were held for over 2000 under­privileged children from 68 creches plus another for our own Sunday Club kids.

* Parties for all of our different support groups and teenagers.

* World AIDS Day event using Drama and music to educate and express our desire to defeat HIV in our generation.

* Mandela Day ( actually whole week!) when we served almost a thousand hot meals and distributed 1,000 blankets.

* Other special events for our support groups and children’s clubs included Easter parties, Freedom Day celebration, special Valentine Day meal,
graduation of 22 of our children to primary school.

* Representatives from The Family Africa were invited to represent our workat an international conference in Abu Dhabi and at the UN in Geneva.

   
 

2011 stats

During the year we distributed to families living with HIV and AIDS and TB.
Orphans and vulner­able families and the aged:

64 tonnes of food aid in the form of milk, bread, mealie meal, meat fresh
fruit and vegetables.

26,000 hot meals

45 big crates of clothing—enough to clothe 120 families living with HIV and
350 children.

Large quantity of Sports equipment

1030 blankets

20 large crates of toiletries

2200 toys for Christmas

Educational equipment and resources for 68 town­ship crèches

HIV awareness programmes for 75 primary classes

and for 50 secondary school classes

HIV seminars for teachers from 24 creches

and for teachers from 4 schools in

Alexandra and for care givers in KZN

Education and group therapy 200 times.

*: The Family Africa is a NGO and WFO Member that brings real hope for the future to thousands of people from previously disadvantaged groups in South Africa.

The organization's work follow a holistic approach to welfare involving the mind, body and spirit. To this end we work on three levels:

1. Short Term: Immediate relief through feeding schemes, provision of clothing and blankets and response to local disasters.

2. Medium term: Education and training including basic skills training, HIV/AIDS awareness programmes in primary and secondary schools and the production of materials to assist prevention and promote attitude change.
