| The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says there are over 60,000 pregnant women in the capital of Haiti alone, and 7,000 of them will give birth in the next month.
UNFPA says 10,000 of the women will need medical care due to complications and one in almost 50 Haitian women risks dying in child birth.
Spokesperson Anne Wittenberg says one of the priorities of UNFPA is to ensure that women have access to professional medical care so they can deliver safely.
"UNFPA in Haiti has already supplied 18 safe delivery and reproductive health kits to our partners. In the next few days UNFP will deliver 20,000 dignity kits to Haiti and these kits contain items such as sanitary napkins, diapers, anti-bacterial soap and other hygiene and cleaning supplies that allow women to live in dignity with their families."
Anne Wittenberg says another priority is to prevent gender-based violence from spreading as it does in crisis situations.
She says UNFPA does that by providing safe spaces for women and ensuring that there is enough lighting in camp sites. |
