| Pointing to the recent reports of widespread sexual assault against women in Guinea, US Senator Barbara Boxer stressed the urgency of appointing a Special Representative to oversee efforts to stop such sexual violence in conflict areas.
"What we're seeing and hearing about are thousands of rapes, almost everyday, across this world. And we heard of a recent story of rapes that occurred in broad daylight in Guinea. And we know as women, and we know as citizens of the world, this is completely unacceptable and it has to stop."
The California Senator says by year's end she expects to see a framework proposed by the Secretary-General for an entity that will review the status of women worldwide. The Chair of a Senate Sub committee responsible for overseeing human rights and the status of women worldwide says there hasn't been enough movement on the issue of violence against women at the United Nations. She says the women of the senate and the people of the United States want to see more action on this issue. |
