Teachers’comments: HIV/AIDS coordinators in two schools told us’ “You have covered the whole year’s curriculum on HIV/AIDS in one programme.”
One teacher told the team when they arrived. “This school is chaos. No one can control the students. It is just not possible.” It was a challenge but by the end of the programme she told us, “You have been able to control them and they have learned. Thank you so much.”. |

We had been asked by one school to do our programme as part of a candle light memorial service for all those from the school who had lost their lives to the pandemic. It is always a very moving experience to realise how HIV affects so many of our learners as they all know someone who has died from AIDS and it constantly underlines the importance of the message and how it can save lives. One extremely important aspect of the programme is to attack the stigma attached to HIV as the stigma is killing thousands as people are to afraid to come forward and be tested and therefore never receive the help that is available. So supporting these programmes can save lives! A Letter received from this school “On behalf of this school community, I wish to extend my thanks for having been part of our Candlelight programme. “Through your work of art, our learners have managed to extend their knowledge of HIV/AIDS. May you keep up with good work in our communities.” |

The teenagers scream, laugh, jump up and down and are generally captivated by the dramas. |

The programme is anaudio/visual interactive extravaganza covering the basics of HIV/AIDS education through a dramatic, fast moving show. It covers information on how the learners can protect themselves, destroys themany myths which surround HIV/AIDS and promotes a positive responseto people living with AIDS. The show also includes ananti drug song performed by teenagers emphasising how drugs andalcohol are important factors which hinder wise decisionmaking. The desperate need for this form of education wassadly underlined this year by the fact that at one school are programme was partnered with a candle light service for learners and teachers at the school who have died ofAIDS.
One of the most popular sections is the Captain Condom skit which covers not only being wise and condomising but also “chat up” lines and how to say no to sex.The team received wonderful responses from all the schools they visited and it our hope that this Road Show has made a real difference not merely as a form of education but as a life changing and life saving experience for all the students.

Letter from a student:
There have been some shows in our school but we have never experienced such a wonderful show with the combination of teaching and entertainment. Your music and drama was superb. Most of us did not know how the HIV acted in our bodies but your drama did an understandable demonstration. When I was watching and listening to you guys, I asked myself what has Jesus got to with HIV? But at the end I finally found my answer from you guys. We have to believe in Jesus infected or not in order to be spiritually relieved. We really appreciate what you have done and we hope you will keep on doing the job not only to our school but to other schools as well.” |
