The World Family Summit +1

 

The World Family Summit +1 was held in Aracaju, Sergipe State, Brazil, from December 3 to 8, 2005.

The World Family Summit +1 was organized by the World Family Organization with the support of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs/NGO-Section/UN-NGO-Informal Regional Network, hosted by the Government of Sergipe State, Brazil, and held in Aracaju City, from December 3 to 8, 2005.

The theme of the Summit, Investing in Development: Working the Millennium Development Goals at the Local Level and in the Family, provided a very fertile ground for discussions on innovative ways to implement the Millennium Development Goals and adopt a Practical Plan of Action that can be easily executed at the Local Level, prioritizing Family focused social public policies, with full participation of the community and the Family.

Around the world, the great engagement of citizens, families and communities is becoming a feature of many governments and both public and private organizations. Families are expecting to be involved and to have a say in the business of local governments and in the political decisions that affect their interests.

The implementation of the Millennium Development Goals by the Local Authorities focusing public social policies and the actions recommended on the Family are renewing commitments to effective engagements of all sectors of society to deliver better results for families and communities.

In many different contexts and at local, state, regional, national and international levels there are public, private, ngos and other community organizations engaging in ways that are making a difference and that are worth hearing about and learning from.

The Summit provided delegates with the opportunity to hear and share examples of contemporary practices, theories and policies from around the world, connected to the benefits of the implementations of the Millennium Development Goals at the Local Level.

The program was designed to open dialogue and encourage the development and maintenance of productive relationships between all stakeholders.

The Summit was attended 300 delegates from 92 countries, including Ministers, Governors, Senior members of National, Regional and Local Governments, Non-Governmental Organizations, Universities, leading Researchers in Family Issues, Parliamentarian groups, Judges in charge of Family Issues, Business Community, Media and Press and the United Nations - UNDESA, UNDP, UNITAR, UNPAN, UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF and UNFPA.

Inauguration of the Nations’ Woods: in honor of the World Family Summit +1, delegations participated in a Tree Planting Ceremony on the Atalaia Seashore.
Each delegation planted a tree which was identify with the name of the country and delegation.

Title: Achieving the MDGs at the Local Level and in the Family - The Political Will
Objectives:
This Session was dedicated to Delegates' statements on the political will of their countries to develop Family-focused strategies bold enough to meet the MDGs at the Local Level and in the Family.

Plenary Session on the MDGs I and VIII
Title: Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger: Forging partnerships for achievements.
Objectives: This Session was discussed the impact of poverty and hunger on local communities, the actions to reduce them and approach proposals on how successful partnerships can be forged involving the Local Level and the Family.

Plenary Session on the MDG II and VIII
Title: Achieving universal primary education: The political will to transform partnerships at the Local Level in a successful endeavor.
Objectives: This Session discussed the access, quality and investments in primary schools and the fast-track initiatives to accelerate progress towards the achievement of universal primary education completion through communitary partnerships.

Plenary Session on the MDG III and VIII
Title: Promote gender equality and empower women: Partnerships for gender equality.
Objectives: This Session discussed strategies to increase the commitments to women's rights to education, reproductive health, property ownership, secure tenure, labor force and political participation.

Day Four
Plenary Session on the MDG IV, V, VI and VIII
Title: Reduce child mortality, improve maternal health and Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases: Successful partnership with the local community.
Objectives: This Session discussed the approach to convince policy makers and service deliverers of the necessary changes to upgrade local health systems, including the sector's financing, the necessary involvement and partnerships with the Local Actors to achieve these goals.

Plenary Session on the MDG VII and VIII
Title: Ensure environmental sustainability: Global and Local partnerships for sustainability.
Objectives: This Session discussed the steps to be taken to reduce the accelerating degradation of biological systems upon which life depends and identify appropriate policy measures that will reverse the present situation.

Plenary Session on ICT and Media
Title: The contribution of the ICT and Media to the MDGs.
Objectives: This Session offered a forum to develop a shared vision on how ICT and Media can empower societies and benefit people, as well as the achievement of the MDGs.

Plenary Session - Governments, Parliaments, Academia, Business Community and Civil Society
Title: Participatory Governance - challenges and prospects.
Objectives: This Session discussed how all sectors of society can interact to contribute to the implementations of the Millennium Development Goals at the Local Level and in the Family.
 
Day Five
 
Field Visits
Technical visits: delegations participated of a technical visit to a project on “Eradication of mud houses” in Aracaju city neighborhood and a technical visit to the Atalaia Art and Culture Center.

Presentation and Approval of the Practical Plan of Action 2006-2015 to implement the Millennium Development Goals at the Local Level and in the Family.

The main achieved results are as follows:

Increased knowledge of Local Actors and Local Authorities about the Millennium Development Goals and the practical ways to implement them in the day-by-day life;

• Increased capacity and willingness of Local Authorities to interact with Families to establish Family-focused social public policies;

• Increased capacity and the willingness of families to participate in local policy discussions, formulation and implementation according to the Millennium Development Goals;

• Establishment of concrete modes of cooperation between local authorities and families to perform activities, capacity building and concrete local projects.

• Discussion and approval of a Practical Plan of Action 2006-2015 to achieve he Millennium Development Goals at the Local Level and in the Family.
