Nikhil Seth is currently the Director of
the Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination. Prior to joining
DESA, he was Secretary of ECOSOC and the Second Committee for
three years. He joined the United Nations in 1993 as Special Assistant
and Chief of Office to the Under-Secretary-General in the Department
of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). He was a delegate to and
helped in the organization of various UN conferences and summits
including the Rio Summit on Environment and Development, the Copenhagen
Summit on Social Development, the Monterrey Conference on Financing
for Development, the Mauritius Conference on Small Island Developing
States and the UN World Summit.
He joined the Indian diplomatic service in 1980 after studies
in economics and a brief stint as a lecturer in economics at the
University of Delhi. His diplomatic assignments included Geneva,
DRC, Central African Republic, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, as
well as the Permanent Mission of India, New York.
In his current assignment, he guided the work of the Economic
and Social Council (ECOSOC) strengthening leading up to the 2007
Substantive Session where the Council has implemented several
of the new mandates given to it including for Annual Ministerial
Review of the Millennium Development goals and the launch of the
Development Cooperation Forum.
