Re: WORLD FAMILY SUMMIT I am writing in relation to the above mentioned subject to which you have cordially invited me to participate. I would like first, to thank you most sincerely for the invitation. Marking the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family (IYF) through the holding of a World Summit of the Family is a testimony of the importance the United Nations, your Organization the World Family Organization (WFO) and our own Organization, the African Union (AU) accord to issues relating to the family. I am personally convinced that issues which will be discussed during the Summit, such as: - Family and Sustainable Development; - Family and Poverty Eradication; - Education; - Gender Equality and Women Empowerment; - Children Health; - Youth and Elderly; - Family and Information and Communication Technologies; - Family and its Role in Dialogue and Cultural Diversity, to name a few of them, are all relevant to what can be done to promote the family as an important key player in the overall development process of our respective countries and regions. It is for those reasons that I value the holding of this Summit which I find timely and it would have been my great pleasure to respond favourably to your invitation to attend. Unfortunately, due to last moment unforeseen development, it will not be possible for me to attend; exactly during the same period (6-7 December 2004), the Executive Council of the AU, one of our decision-making organ is holding an Extraordinary Session to discuss issues of major importance for the Commission, including the Vision, Mission, Strategic Plan and the Budget for 2005. As you could understand, my presence as a Commissioner is, of no doubt, very important. I am convinced that the Summit will be successful and wish you fruitful deliberations and outcome. I shall be pleased to receive all the outcome of the Summit including the anticipated Declaration. With my best regards.
