Launching and Progress

The Launching of the Preparatory Phase of the World Family Summit was held in Curitiba, State of Paraná, Brazil, from 10 to 13 of May, 2003, at the Auditorium of the Barigui Park.

A Conference to launch the Preparatory Phase was organized to bring together representatives of WFO Regions, UN/DESA, the Brazilian Government, UN Specialized Agencies and UN Regional Comissions to discuss the organizational aspects of the Summit and the Preparatory Phase of the Regional Meetings.

Participants of 42 chosen countries were received by the Brazilian Government and by the Mayor of Curitiba to complete a very comprehensive agenda of 3 days.


Inaugural Ceremony

The inaugural ceremony of the Event took place at the Auditorium of Barigui Park, on May 10, 2003. Authorities, representatives of Federal Government, Federal Parliament, Judiciary, Paraná State Parliament, Brazilian Municipalities, Paraná State Municipalities, Council of Local Authorities, Diplomats, NGOs and Private Sector attended the Ceremony.

In welcoming the participants, His Excelency Mr. Cassio TANIGUCHI, Mayor of Curitiba, emphasized the work of his city to reduce poverty and ensure better life conditions to the citizens through an enhanced policy for family well-being and development .

Dr. Deisi KUSZTRA, President of the World Family Organization, welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of the Event as an effective contribution to the work of ECOSOC for the worldwide well-being of Families and the context and the objectives of the Meeting was presented.

Mrs. Hanifa MEZOUI, Chief of the UN NGO-Section, emphasized the role played by WFO in the International, National and Local levels and its effective contribution to the work of ECOSOC as well as to major global events organized by the United Nations. Mrs. Hanifa Mezoui congratulated WFO for its outstanding initiative to organize a World Family Summit in partnership with the United Nations to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family, and expressed full support to the initiative which will contribute to the Millennium Development Goals.

Mrs. Najet KARABORNI, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Interregional Senior Advisor, focused on the following three main aspects: a) for a strengthened global partnership between Civil Society and the United Nations, b) the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Family role in their implementation and c) the expected outcomes / results of the Launching of Preparatory Phase for the World Family Summit.

Mr. François LORIOT, UN Department of Public Administration Senior Advisor , presented the Millennium Development Goals as elated to family issues, underlining the participatory governance.

Her Excelency, Mrs. Benedita DA SILVA, Minister for Social Assistance and Promotion of Brazil, emphasized the importance of the World Family Summit for all families and development actors worldwide and commited full support of the Brazilian Government to the work of WFO, as well as to other partners involved in the preparation of the Summit. Thanking the UN for the support to this great initiative, the importance for the countries to effectively implement the MDGs and contribute to the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family was highlighted. Her Excelency, the Minister informed that Brazil has already defined a National Strategy for Family Policy in the framework of the economic, social and sustainable development, believing that Brazil and will actively contribute to the implementation of the MDGs, which will directly benefit the Brazilian families. Finally, Her Excelency, the Minister declared that His Excelency Mr. Luis Inácio Lula DA SILVA , President of Brazil, is giving to WFO not only the support but also the responsibility to make the World Family Summit a great success in achieving its expected results.
