Meeting-point Europe
- families and generations on new paths

A Symposium as Part of the German EU Presidency

Conference 19 – 20 March 2007
Hotel Aquino Conference Center, Berlin
Catholic Academy

The demographic trend in nearly all european countries with its known consequences for population composition, economic dynamics, social security systems and family politics is one of the biggest challenges for the member states of the European Union. In this context, the DNK wishes to make its contribution in cooperation with the European Region of WFO, organising a conference which brings together several relevant issues.

When generations do not self-evidently meet in families any more, a new question has to be asked: how can generations stay in contact with each other and learn from one another? This leads to the subject of supporting families to contribute to the preservation of a solidary society. Furthermore, there is the big complex of Lifelong Learning: It is above all in the families that a basis is provided for children and teenagers, but also for the older generation, to experience learning as an enrichment of their life and to stay open and capable for the always changing demands which come up in building their life.

The Conference “Meeting Point Europe: Families and Generations on new Paths” is taking up these issues in a special way. It is conceived not as much as an abstract and academic symposium but as a platform for projects and ideas that have already been prepared in some of its member states. Exchanging thoughts and ideas on the future-oriented subjects Families and Generations is the focus of this symposium, which is being complemented by presentation of projects and initiatives, plans and programmes and by many possibilities for individual dialogue.

In different workshops, the members can get a picture of intergenerative approaches, voluntary engagement and of work with young families. They are being invited to discuss prospects and outlooks for families in Europe.
